Dante’s Circles
“In a Dark Wood” acrylic on board 95cm x 84cm
Alan painted images that respond to each of the three parts of Dante Alighieri’s “The Divine Comedy”. He was fascinated by Dante’s writings since his early years as a student of art and theology. As well as “In a Dark Wood” (Inferno) Alan painted images representing Purgatorio and Paradiso – which this last he called “Deep Light”. All three were donated to Lady Margaret Hall by Sue Tyson
Thanks to the Principal and Fellows of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, the paintings can be seen by members of the public in the chapel, Occasionally they may be sited elsewhere so it may be best to contact the chaplain prior to a visit.
