“Patterns engraved into tne earth…”

“We live with trees and their leaves; with grass, rocks and water. Light, wind and weather change. Prairies and lawns and forests have different rhythms and even, it seems, moods.

As landscapes become familiar, they can appear as patterns engraved into the earth. Clusters of growing shapes, lines and curves are revealed. Like musical notation, repeated marks evoke rhythms of hills and valleys while in-between intervals add subtlety. The flowof energy caused by the interplay between surfaces and passing light takes on the quality of a compelling pulse.

As we focus on a narrower motif – perhaps light through branches or the hypnotic view through a forest of tree trunks – we enter a realm where reflection dents our consciousness and leaves profound marks. We easily recognise the scene and are allowed to concentrateon the play of light.

If we put the observed world aside and wrestle with the order of geometrical shapes combined with the forces of light, we are in another domain. Partly-geometrical shapes canbe gathered together to create a sense of fluctuating space with depth and shadow which speak of light and order.

Mathematicians tell us of the beauty of number and proportion. Architects harness geometry to create grandeur or serenity. Catastrophes create broken structures. In attempts to evoke the divine, irregular marks yearn to become stable. An undercurrent of geometry joined to the colours of light can suggest fragments of a larger consciousness.”
