Very much an artist’s picture. Alan, like many others, gathered objects, which he displayed around his house. This picture presents some of them including a drawing of an egg. Piero della Francesca was almost certainly Alan’s favourite artist. In Piero’s masterpiece, the Montefeltro Altarpiece in Milan, there hangs a ‘celestial’ egg and it is possible this sketch is of Alan’s is an echo of that.
